Dodgers Manager Raves About LA's Newest Secret Weapon in Bullpen

How do the Dodgers keep doing this?

Call it elite scouting, player development, an eye for talent, or divine intervention, but the front office has a real penchant for unearthing productive pitching from out of nowhere.

The latest example is Jack Dreyer — a total afterthought when fans were excitedly crafting what they believed the Opening Day roster would look like. After all, Dreyer was a 26-year-old lefty with no prior MLB experience.

Since being called up for the Tokyo Series, there’s not been a more effective pitcher on the roster. Manager Dave Roberts spoke glowingly about Dreyer during his usual media scrum.

“He just seems unflappable,” Roberts said. “There’s no situation that I’ve seen so far that’s too big for him. He’s just got good stuff and he commands the baseball, the fastball, the breaking ball. He’s been really helpful.”

To put into perspective how good Dreyer has been, as of April 17, he has the lowest ERA on the entire team (0.75). It’s not an insignificant sample size, either. Dreyer has pitched 12 innings, allowing only three hits while striking out 16.

According to Baseball Savant, Dreyer ranks in the 95th percentile or better in Pitching Run Value, Fastball Run Value, xERA, xBA, and hard-hit percentage. In other words, he’s striking out a ton of guys while allowing soft contact otherwise.

Primarily, Dreyer is a two-pitch pitcher relying heavily on a four-seam fastball and a slider (with the occasional curveball). The rise and movement on Dreyer’s fastball is particularly exciting. To date, he’s not allowed a single hit on a fastball he’s thrown this year. Additionally, his slider has accounted for more than half the strikeouts he’s accrued.

As previously stated, this is yet another weapon the Dodgers have seemingly uncovered beyond anyone’s expectations. Should Dreyer continue to pitch at this level, there’s no question he will be a fixture within the bullpen for the duration of this regular season and perhaps the postseason should Los Angeles get there.
