Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Reveals Thoughts on Torpedo Bat, Whether or Not He’d Switch

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani was recently asked whether he would consider using the new torpedo bats taking Major League Baseball by storm.

He was asked during the Japanese media portion of his postgame scrum following his walk-off home run on his MVP bobblehead night. His response was translated from Japanese to English:
“I don’t think I’d suddenly start using it,” Ohtani said. “I wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility, but I’m very satisfied with my current bat, and I feel like I’m getting the right feel from it.”
He added: “For now, I think I’ll stick with the bat I’m using.”
The bat he’s using has done Ohtani quite well, as he’s already slashing .333/.459/.667 through eight games with three home runs and an OPS of 1.126.
His bat also helped him make MLB history last year, becoming the first player to hit 50 or more home runs while stealing 50 or more bases in the same season.
While the torpedo bats have proven effective for a handful of stars, Ohtani doesn’t exactly need to switch things up. While the New York Yankees put the bats on the league’s radar, their superstar — Aaron Judge — felt similarly to Ohtani regarding a potential bat switch.
“What I did the past couple of seasons speaks for itself,” Judge said. “Why try to change something if you have something that’s working?”
A couple Dodgers — Max Muncy and Kiké Hernández — ordered the new bats. Muncy tried it out in Wednesday’s game, going 0-for-3 with the torpedo bat before switching back to his old bat and hitting a two-run double for his first runs batted in of the season.
